A compact mountain fortress is the safest foundation for a RimWorld endgame colony.

The best RimWorld endgame build is a 10–12-colonist mountain fortress with a central stockpile, nutrient paste or hydroponic food supply, redundant geothermal power, layered defenses, and specialized combat roles. Prioritize Fabrication, Multi-Analyzer, Cataphract Armor, Shield Belts, Deep Drilling, and the ship or Royal Ascent research path; this setup handles sieges, infestations, mech clusters, and the final launch defense without relying on a single killbox.

This guide targets vanilla RimWorld with practical advice for Royalty, Ideology, and Biotech colonies. The core plan also works if you own none of the expansions. For the current game version and expansion list, check the official RimWorld Steam page and Ludeon’s developer news archive.

1. Build the Endgame Base Around a Mountain Core

Keep critical rooms close to the central hallway to reduce dangerous walking time.

Choose a mountain tile with at least one geothermal vent and enough flat exterior ground for farming, a landing zone, and a controlled attack approach. Mine a 13-by-13 central room for a stockpile and workshop connection, then create a two-tile-wide hallway loop around it. The second tile gives colonists room to pass while injured pawns, haulers, and animals move through the base.

Use 3-by-4 bedrooms for ordinary colonists, with a bed, end table, dresser, torch lamp or standing lamp, and one tile of decoration. Give your best psycaster or royal a 5-by-6 bedroom with a fine or lavish bed. Place the hospital beside the freezer, using sterile tiles, vitals monitors, hospital beds, and a clean room separated from workshops by doors. A 10-by-12 freezer at -5°C is enough for most colonies; double-wall it and install two coolers so one failure does not spoil the food.

Put the kitchen between the freezer and dining room, but do not let the butcher table share the cooking room. A nutrient paste dispenser against the freezer wall removes cook workload and guarantees meals during a raid. If mood matters more than labor efficiency, use a dedicated cook with Cooking 8 or higher for lavish meals. Keep chemfuel, mortar shells, and toxic waste in separate fireproof rooms outside the living core.

2. Use a Research and Production Order That Scales

Layered defenses combine traps, cover, turrets and controlled firing lanes.

Core research priorities

Research Microelectronics first, followed by Multi-Analyzer, Fabrication, and the armor and weapon branches your colony needs. Fabrication unlocks the component bench and component assembly, allowing you to manufacture components instead of depending on traders. Research Precision Rifling for Charge Rifles, then Powered Armor and Cataphract Armor for the frontline.

For power, take Geothermal Power before expanding heavily, then Batteries and, if available, Watermill or Biofuel Refining. Build two geothermal generators on separate conduits and reserve chemfuel generators for emergencies. Use four batteries in a roofed, stone-walled battery room with a switch on each power line. Never connect every generator and battery through one vulnerable outdoor conduit; a short circuit or solar flare should not shut down the freezer and hospital together.

After the core infrastructure is stable, research Ground-Penetrating Scanner and Deep Drilling. A drill operator with Mining 8 or higher can provide steel and components indefinitely, while the scanner’s long cooldown makes it better for planned resource runs than emergency repairs. The Long-range Mineral Scanner is especially valuable when your mountain tile lacks compacted machinery or a large steel deposit.

3. Assign Exact Combat Roles and Loadouts

Cataphract armor and charge weapons give your frontline colonists dependable stopping power.

Recommended endgame squad

Build around six dedicated fighters, three workers who can fight when drafted, and two or three specialists. Give two frontline pawns Cataphract Armor, a Shield Belt, and a Charge Lance. Charge Lances deal heavy single-target damage and are excellent against centipedes, doomsday users, and heavily armored raiders. Use a Charge Rifle on three reliable shooters because its range, accuracy, and burst damage work in almost every raid.

Give one shooter a Minigun for close killbox lanes and another a Heavy SMG if their Shooting skill is mediocre. A pawn with Shooting 10 or higher should carry a Sniper Rifle when handling sieges or exposed mech clusters, but do not use sniper weapons inside cramped corridors. Keep two Doomsday Rocket Launchers and at least two triple rocket launchers in an armory for breachers and clustered enemies. Transport Pods make it possible to reposition these weapons before a major attack.

Install bionic arms on shooters or crafters after you can sustain advanced components. A Bionic Eye improves shooting accuracy, while a Bionic Arm increases manipulation for crafters, doctors, and melee pawns. For melee specialists, use a Persona Zeushammer against mechs or a Persona Monosword against humans. A Tough, nimble pawn with a shield belt can absorb attention while ranged colonists fire from behind cover.

Royalty and Biotech upgrades

Royalty psycasts make this build dramatically safer. Prioritize Skip to pull a centipede into focus fire, Berserk Pulse to disrupt a dense melee group, Stun for dangerous single targets, and Vertigo Pulse against clustered humanoids. Smokepop packs protect a push across open ground, while Broadshield Packs block incoming ranged fire. In Biotech, use a mechanitor with a bandwidth pack, control groups, and Militors or Pikemen as expendable screening units; never let a single destroyed bandwidth pack disable every mechanoid simultaneously.

Ideology colonies should use roles deliberately. A Leader with Moral Guide abilities can stabilize mood after deaths, while a dedicated Preacher or high-Social pawn handles conversion and recruitment. RimWorld’s social systems are as important as weapon quality, so keep your best doctor and researcher away from avoidable frontline injuries. Steamoz also covers specialized build planning in its solo class guide and defensive setup guide.

4. Build Layered Defenses Instead of One Killbox

RimWorld endgame power grid with geothermal generators batteries and sun lamps
Redundant power and isolated batteries prevent one raid from disabling the colony.

A killbox is useful, but the strongest endgame defense has three layers. First, place an outer stone wall with doors that let colonists exit safely. Second, create a trap corridor using alternating granite spike traps and one-tile turns. Third, build a 20-to-30-tile firing lane with sandbags or barricades, deadfall cover, and a rear line for shooters. Use granite for walls and traps; avoid wood except for temporary structures.

Install two autocannons and four mini-turrets behind embrasures or barricade cover, but keep turrets spaced so one explosion cannot destroy the entire line. Put an incendiary mortar shell and an EMP mortar shell in the mortar room. EMP grenades stop Scythers, Pikemen, and Centipedes briefly, but EMP does nothing to ordinary raiders, so carry frag grenades for grouped humans and tox grenades for long defensive fights.

Always maintain an alternate defense route inside the mountain. Infestations can spawn in dark, warm overhead mountain areas, and sappers or breachers ignore your preferred entrance. Keep a second fortified room with barricades, spare weapons, and medical beds. When a mech cluster arrives, destroy the proximity activator only after smoke, shields, or line-of-sight blockers are ready. Against sieges, send a fast pawn with a shield belt or use a mortar counter-barrage before the enemy finishes building.

5. Secure Food, Power, and Medical Reserves

Build the ship reactor in a sealed wing and prepare for the 15-day reactor defense.

Maintain at least 30 days of food before beginning the endgame event. For a 10-colonist colony, 600 simple meals is a useful minimum reserve, although nutrient paste can stretch it significantly. Grow rice early for speed, corn for labor efficiency, and healroot in a temperature-controlled room. Keep 100 herbal medicine, 50 industrial medicine, and glitterworld medicine reserved for surgery, bionic installation, and critical combat wounds.

Set drug policies rather than banning every substance. A scheduled beer or psychite tea can improve mood, but keep yayo, flake, and wake-up under strict emergency control because addiction can destroy an otherwise stable colony. Build a hospital backup cooler and a second freezer power switch. Install firefoam poppers in the workshop, battery room, and armory; one incendiary shell or exploding mortar can otherwise end the run instantly.

6. Prepare the Final Endgame Event

For the vanilla ship, complete the research path, build the Ship Computer Core, Reactor, Engine, and Cryptosleep Caskets, then stockpile food, medicine, and ammunition before activation. The reactor countdown lasts 15 days, and raids escalate during that period. Start it only after your fighters have full health, your armor is repaired, and every major weapon has replacement components.

Seal the reactor in a separate stone bunker with a two-door airlock and connect it to your main defense through a protected corridor. Move noncombatants into the mountain core, keep doctors and firefighters drafted nearby, and reserve rocket launchers for centipedes or massed breachers. Do not launch immediately after surviving one raid: repair turrets, replace traps, rebuild power conduits, and refill the freezer first.

Royal Ascent requires a different commitment: satisfy the royal guest’s expectations, construct the throne room, and defend the Stellarch for the required stay. A high-quality throne room, fine flooring, impressive art, and reliable recreation prevent avoidable mood breaks. For additional colony-planning references, see Steamoz’s co-op build analysis, weapon tier guide, and survival location guide.

The winning principle is redundancy: two power sources, two defensive positions, multiple doctors, reserve weapons, and a second route through the base. RimWorld’s endgame punishes a colony that depends on one corridor, one cook, or one legendary weapon. A compact mountain fortress with disciplined loadouts and a staged final event gives you the control needed to survive the last raid and finish the story on your terms.
