Build momentum quickly by chaining nearby victories across the campaign map.

To level up fast in Total War: Warhammer 3, keep one lord fighting almost every turn, target nearby enemies that can be defeated without heavy losses, and spend early skill points on campaign movement and battle access. The fastest reliable route in Immortal Empires is a tight victory loop: recruit a compact army, attack weak settlements and armies, resolve favorable fights manually when needed, sack or occupy intelligently, then use the next turn to attack again. Heroes should stay embedded in that army or perform successful actions rather than sitting idle in a capital.

This approach works across the Grand Cathay, Kislev, Empire, Skaven, Greenskins, Daemons of Chaos, and other campaigns, although faction mechanics change the best targets. Check the official Steam page for Total War: WARHAMMER III for the current edition and DLC roster before starting a campaign.

Build a Fast XP Loop From Turn One

Early campaign points should improve movement and battle access.

Choose a starting settlement with an immediate military objective nearby. Your first priority is not a perfect economy; it is a force large enough to win two or three low-risk battles in the opening turns. Recruit units that cover your lord’s weaknesses, then move toward hostile minor factions, rebel armies, or exposed settlements. Every successful battle gives the participating lord experience, while heroic actions and completed missions can provide additional XP.

Do not waste movement by crossing the map for a single distant target. A strong early route usually looks like this: attack an enemy army, replenish, pressure its nearest settlement, then fight the relief force that responds. If an enemy army retreats, use the campaign movement preview before chasing it. A victory that leaves your army unable to move is often slower than ending the turn in a better position for the next engagement.

Fight manually when the battle is close, when your lord is under-leveled, or when preserving elite units matters. Auto-resolve is useful against tiny garrisons and heavily inferior armies, but it can create unnecessary casualties that force several turns of replenishment. More battles per ten turns generally means more lord XP than one spectacular victory followed by a long recovery.

Spend Lord Skill Points on Movement First

Embedded heroes gain reliable experience while supporting repeated battles.

For most legendary lords, the first campaign objective is to reach the blue skill-line movement boost, commonly called Route Marcher. It increases campaign movement range by 15 percent and lets an army reach more targets, escape danger, or reinforce an adjacent fight. The exact path varies by lord, but prioritize the movement skill before expensive red-line unit bonuses if your goal is rapid leveling.

After Route Marcher, take skills that improve the lord’s immediate battlefield role. A front-line fighter benefits from personal melee attack, weapon strength, or survivability; a caster should unlock the spells that deliver efficient area damage or healing; a monster lord should improve the ability that lets it break infantry formations. Do not buy three unrelated abilities simply because they are available. A focused skill path wins battles sooner, which creates more XP opportunities.

At higher levels, unlock Lightning Strike when it is available in the blue line. It allows an army to attack an enemy force without nearby reinforcements joining the battle, making it one of the strongest tools for farming safe victories against clustered armies. The blue line also contains useful upkeep and replenishment skills, but Lightning Strike is usually worth more than a minor economic bonus when several enemy armies are operating together.

Legendary lords also receive unique skill trees. Examine names such as Imrik’s Dragon encounters, Grom the Paunch’s Cauldron, or Thorek Ironbrow’s ancestral abilities before committing points. These faction-specific systems can be stronger than generic bonuses, but only if they directly improve the army you are using.

Use Heroes to Multiply Campaign Progress

Sacking can fund an army and provide another valuable character experience spike.

Heroes level through successful actions, battles, and army support. Embed a hero in the main army whenever its action is unreliable or unnecessary. An embedded spellcaster can contribute magic in every battle, while a combat hero can protect the lord and gain experience without risking a separate army. A hero that repeatedly fails actions is wasting turns and may gain less progress than one assigned to support the army.

For example, an Empire Bright Wizard can provide Fireball against single targets and later use Flame Storm or Burning Head to punish infantry blobs. A Skaven Warlock Engineer improves a missile-heavy army with ammunition and ranged bonuses, while a Vampire Counts Necromancer supports undead armies with healing and resurrection magic. These heroes become more valuable when they participate in frequent battles instead of being left in a settlement for public-order duty.

Recruit heroes as soon as your economy can support them, but do not fill every available slot with low-impact characters. One useful hero embedded in an active army is better for fast progression than several idle agents. If a hero has a reliable assassination, assault, or block-army action against a wounded target, use it before the main attack. A successful action can weaken the opponent and add experience without consuming the army’s movement.

Farm Safe Battles, Sacking Rewards, and Missions

Quest battles deliver major rewards, but they should be attempted with a prepared army.

The best XP target is an enemy that is close enough to attack repeatedly but weak enough to defeat without rebuilding your army. Minor settlements, damaged armies, and isolated garrisons are ideal. Avoid repeatedly attacking a heavily defended settlement just for experience; high casualties create a longer downtime cycle and can cost more turns than the XP is worth.

Sacking is useful when you need immediate treasury income or want to damage an enemy settlement before occupying it. A lord who sacks a settlement gains the battle-related progression while receiving gold, then can occupy it later if the strategic position is safe. Do not sack every settlement automatically: occupying a province capital can unlock recruitment buildings, replenish your army, and prevent an enemy faction from rebuilding. Use sack-then-occupy when the extra money and experience justify one additional turn.

Pay attention to missions and dilemmas. Early missions often ask for a specific battle, settlement, or action and can reward gold, items, or direct character experience. A mission target near your current front is effectively a bonus objective. Avoid abandoning your main expansion route to chase a reward across hostile territory, but complete easy objectives before ending a turn.

Quest battles are another major source of rewards and often unlock a legendary lord’s signature item. For instance, an item quest may grant a unique weapon or mount after a dedicated battle. Start the quest only when the army can handle its fixed enemy composition; winning the battle quickly is helpful, but losing and rebuilding destroys the leveling tempo.

Use Recruitment, Autoresolve, and Difficulty Correctly

Recruitment rank can save time. Buildings, technologies, faction effects, and lord skills may allow new units or heroes to enter at higher levels. Keep a second lord near the front when your main lord needs to recover. A reinforcing army can turn a marginal battle into a safe victory and gives another character regular XP. However, do not split one strong army into two weak forces merely to create more character slots; a defeat costs far more progress than a small extra battle provides.

Autoresolve is most efficient when the predicted result is decisive and casualties are low. Before clicking it, check whether valuable heroes or expensive units are likely to take damage. Manual battles are particularly important for factions with strong spellcasters, artillery, or elite monsters, because the player can preserve those units while inflicting disproportionate losses. The goal is not to maximize battles at any cost; it is to maximize successful battles per turn.

Higher battle difficulty can alter autoresolve results and make early progression slower. If fast leveling is the priority, use Normal battle difficulty while learning a faction’s opening route. Campaign difficulty still affects economy, public order, and enemy pressure, so lowering it does not remove the need to plan movement. Finally, keep your main lord active until the army has reached its intended power spike. A level 10 lord with Route Marcher, a coherent combat role, and one or two useful heroes will usually outperform a level 15 lord that spent several turns defending an empty province. Once the front is secure, use a second army to protect settlements while the experienced force continues hunting enemy armies, completing missions, and preparing its next quest battle.

For related build planning, Steamoz also covers early-game character progression and co-op build roles. In Warhammer 3, the same principle remains decisive: move efficiently, fight often, protect your experienced characters, and spend every skill point on a clear campaign or battlefield purpose. That is the fastest sustainable path to high-level lords and heroes.

Balance updates can change skill values, autoresolve behavior, and faction openings, but the core XP loop remains consistent: active armies level faster than passive ones.
