The best Astroneer equipment turns a dangerous planet into a workable base.

Short answer: Astroneer does not have a conventional Megatech weapon class or a combat-focused weapon tree. The strongest equipment is the gear that keeps you alive, expands the Terrain Tool’s reach, and removes travel chores. For most players, the S-tier ranking is Terrain Tool upgrades, Portable Oxygenator, RTG, QT-RTG, and Hoverboard. The Auto Extractor, Paver, Drill Strength upgrades, and Hydrazine Jet Pack follow close behind, while the Small Generator and basic Augments are useful mainly during the early game.

That distinction matters if you searched for an Astroneer Megatech weapon tier list. Astroneer is built around survival, terraforming, logistics, and automation rather than shooting enemies. There are hazards, hostile flora, environmental accidents, and mission objectives, but no traditional sword, rifle, or character damage meta. So this ranking treats “weapons” as the tools that give you the biggest practical advantage: mining speed, oxygen uptime, power output, mobility, and control over terrain.

Terrain Tool upgrades are the backbone of every serious Astroneer loadout.

The table below ranks equipment by its total impact on a normal save, not by how impressive it looks in the Catalog. An item earns S-tier when it changes your operating range or permanently removes a major bottleneck. A-tier tools are excellent but depend more heavily on a specific activity, planet, or vehicle setup.

EquipmentTierMain advantageBest use
Terrain Tool with Drill Mod 3SFast, precise diggingHard terrain, caves, resource extraction
Portable OxygenatorSBackpack oxygen generationLong expeditions away from tethers
RTGSContinuous 4 U/s powerVehicles, bases, extractors, remote setups
QT-RTGSCompact 1 U/s power sourceBackpack tools and small field builds
HoverboardSFast ground movementSurface scouting and resource runs
Auto ExtractorAAutomated resource productionLarge-scale mining operations

Hydrazine Jet PackAVertical movement and shortcutsMountains, ravines, and orbital travel
Drill Strength 3AImproves vehicle diggingHeavy rover excavation
Small GeneratorBEarly portable powerStarting base and emergency charging
Oxygen FiltersBEmergency oxygen reserveEarly exploration before Oxygenator

This ranking assumes normal survival play, not a self-imposed challenge run. If you are building a huge automated factory, the Auto Extractor and RTG move even higher. If you are still exploring Sylva’s caves, the Terrain Tool and oxygen upgrades matter much more than late-game automation.

S-tier gear that changes the whole game

Oxygen and power independence completely change exploration.

Terrain Tool upgrades

The Terrain Tool is Astroneer’s closest equivalent to a weapon. It controls the battlefield, opens escape routes, removes obstacles, exposes buried resources, and lets you reshape a planet instead of merely walking across it. The base tool is already essential, but its Augments determine whether mining feels deliberate or painfully slow.

Drill Mod 3 is the premium choice when you need to cut through tougher terrain quickly. It consumes more power than lower-level Drill Mods, so pair it with a QT-RTG or another reliable backpack source. The payoff is worth it on Calidor, Glacio, and especially in dense cave systems where stopping to recharge every few seconds destroys your momentum.

Wide Mod deserves S-tier status for terraforming and bulk excavation. It removes terrain across a broader area, making it ideal for flattening a landing zone, carving a vehicle tunnel, or clearing a large underground chamber. It is less precise than a narrow setup, so keep it off when extracting a single resource node beside a delicate structure.

Boost Mod improves Terrain Tool responsiveness and digging speed, but it is best viewed as a flexible companion rather than an automatic replacement for Drill Mod 3. A common high-efficiency loadout is Drill Mod 3, Boost Mod, and Wide Mod, with the third slot swapped for Inhibitor Mod when you need careful shaping. Terrain Analyzer is the specialist option for matching terrain colors, not a general-purpose mining upgrade.

Portable Oxygenator

The Portable Oxygenator is one of the biggest progression jumps in Astroneer. Once installed in your backpack, it converts available power into oxygen while you explore, removing the need to drag tether lines through every cave. It does not create free energy, though. The device needs a power source, and that makes a QT-RTG the cleanest pairing for solo expeditions.

Its real strength is flexibility. You can carry a Soil Canister, a couple of resource stacks, and recovery items without turning every expedition into a tether-building exercise. You still need to watch the backpack power meter, because oxygen production and powered Augments compete for the same supply. When the meter drops, stop using the Drill Mod before you lose oxygen coverage.

RTG and QT-RTG

The full-size RTG produces 4 U/s continuously. It needs no fuel and never pauses, which makes it the backbone of remote bases, rail stations, vehicles, and Auto Extractor sites. It is expensive, but unlike generators, it doesn't create a fuel chain that you must keep feeding.

The QT-RTG produces 1 U/s and fits conveniently into a backpack slot. That output is modest, but it is enough to power a Portable Oxygenator and keep light equipment running. Carrying one is often more useful than hauling several Small Generators, especially when your goal is exploration rather than base construction.

A-tier equipment for exploration and automation

Mobility gear saves more time than almost any late-game upgrade.

Hoverboard

The Hoverboard is arguably the most underrated S-tier candidate in the game. I place it in high S-tier for exploration and A-tier overall because it cannot carry large cargo the way a rover can. Its speed, however, makes it phenomenal for scouting, collecting loose resources, and returning to a base before oxygen becomes a problem.

Use it on reasonably open terrain, not inside tight caves or steep, cluttered ravines. The board is fast enough to launch you into a dangerous drop if you hold the line carelessly. Keep a Solid-Fuel Jump Jet or another recovery option available on unfamiliar planets, and remember that vehicles remain better for hauling multiple medium or large objects.

Hydrazine Jet Pack

The Hydrazine Jet Pack turns vertical terrain from a wall into a route. It is brilliant on Sylva’s mountains, Calidor’s open surface, and Glacio’s broken plateaus. It also makes late-game missions and gateway travel less frustrating because you can cross gaps instead of searching for a natural slope.

The trade-off is fuel management. Hydrazine is valuable for other equipment and should not be burned casually during a long-distance flight. Use short controlled bursts, land to recharge your bearings, and never start a deep descent without knowing where you will touch down. The Jet Pack is movement gear, not a substitute for oxygen planning.

Auto Extractor

The Auto Extractor is the best automation tool for players who have outgrown manual mining. Place it on a resource deposit, provide power, and let it work while you build storage, sort materials, or complete missions elsewhere. Its efficiency depends on correct placement: it must sit over the resource field, and its production slows or stops when the deposit is exhausted.

Pair one with an RTG, a medium or large storage solution, and a nearby vehicle or rail connection. A remote extractor powered by a Small Generator looks cheap at first, but the fuel runs and maintenance erase much of the convenience. Automation only becomes genuinely powerful when the support network is as reliable as the machine.

Paver and Drill Strength

The Paver is an A-tier logistics tool. It lays a road under a rover as you drive, smoothing rough ground and preventing many frustrating rollovers. Combine it with a Soil Centrifuge-fed Soil Canister setup if you want a sustained road-building operation. It is less valuable for short trips, but outstanding when connecting a base to a distant mine or gateway.

Drill Strength upgrades belong on a heavy rover when you want to cut through terrain instead of navigating around it. The vehicle-mounted drill is powerful, but it can also bury your machine or create a slope that is impossible to climb. Use the Paver immediately after drilling a route and save often before reshaping a narrow passage.

B-tier equipment and the mistakes that waste resources

Automation equipment earns its ranking by replacing repetitive mining trips.

B-tier does not mean useless. It means the item solves a smaller problem, has a clear replacement, or becomes awkward outside its intended stage of progression.

The most common mistake is buying every Augment immediately. Astroneer’s Bytes are limited early on, and a wide collection of mediocre tools is worse than a focused loadout. Prioritize the Research Chamber, unlock core oxygen and power technology, then buy the upgrades that match your current planet and objective.

Another trap is carrying too many generators. A Small Generator plus Organic can rescue a dead backpack, but it is not a serious expedition plan. The same applies to Oxygen Filters: keep one or two for emergencies, but don't build your route around a consumable that disappears after a few minutes of exploration.

Best Megatech-style loadouts for each stage

Early game: safe mining kit

Start with the Terrain Tool, Soil Canister, Oxygen Filters, Small Generator, and a small storage item. Your priorities are oxygen, resin, compound, and a stable starting shelter. Do not rush into deep caves simply because a shiny resource is visible. Build tether lines, mark the entrance, and leave a power source near the route.

Mid-game: independent explorer

Move to Portable Oxygenator, QT-RTG, Drill Mod 2 or 3, Wide Mod, and Hoverboard. This loadout lets you travel quickly, mine efficiently, and return without constructing a tether highway. Carry a beacon so you can mark gateways, wrecks, and resource clusters. If you are tuning performance for large bases, our FPS troubleshooting guide offers useful general PC habits, but Astroneer’s biggest slowdowns usually come from world objects and automation rather than combat effects.

Late game: industrial operator

Use an RTG, Terrain Tool with Drill Mod 3 and Wide Mod, a Paver-equipped rover, Auto Extractor, storage, and a rail or vehicle connection. Put the RTG at the extractor rather than wasting backpack space on generators. Keep a QT-RTG on your character anyway: it is cheap insurance if you wander away from the network.

This is where Astroneer stops feeling like a survival scramble and starts feeling like an engineering sandbox. A good factory layout shortens every trip. Place smelting, chemistry, soil processing, and storage close together, then use rails or large vehicles to move bulk materials. Our weapon-value ranking for Everspace covers a very different game, but the same principle applies here: spend resources on equipment that improves your repeatable loop, not on flashy gear you rarely activate.

The best all-purpose ranking

For a single “best equipment” answer, run Portable Oxygenator, QT-RTG, Drill Mod 3, Wide Mod, and Hoverboard. Swap Wide Mod for Boost Mod when precision mining matters, or carry the Hydrazine Jet Pack when the planet is dominated by vertical terrain. For hauling, ditch the Hoverboard and take a rover with Paver and Drill Strength.

There is no damage-per-second chart hiding behind the Megatech label. The real Astroneer meta is uptime: how long you can stay away from shelter, how quickly you can shape terrain, how much power you can provide without fuel, and how few empty trips your base requires. Rank equipment by those questions and the best choices become obvious.

If you enjoy this kind of systems-focused ranking, compare it with Steamoz’s Dungeons 2 weapon tier list or the Empires of the Undergrowth progression guide. Astroneer has fewer traditional weapons, but its equipment decisions are just as consequential: the right tool can save an entire expedition, while the wrong one can strand you beneath the surface with an empty backpack.

For patch notes, platform changes, and developer announcements, follow System Era’s official Astroneer blog and the Astroneer community wiki. The final verdict is simple: prioritize oxygen independence, continuous power, and Terrain Tool performance first. Once those three pillars are solved, mobility and automation turn every planet into a much friendlier place to work.
