Rusty, Ayre, and Handler Walter occupy the S tier in this Armored Core 6 character tier list for 2026, while Freud and Cinder Carla lead the A tier. This ranking covers every major named pilot, handler, ally, and antagonist by combining combat capability, mission impact, boss difficulty, narrative importance, and usefulness to 621. It does not pretend that Armored Core 6 has a traditional roster of playable characters: most of these characters are encountered as bosses, radio support, or story allies.

The list reflects the current PC and console version of Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, including the full base-game campaign, New Game++, Arena encounters, and all three endings. For the official release details, see the Armored Core 6 Steam page and the official Armored Core website.

How This Armored Core 6 Tier List Works

Rusty piloting Steel Haze in Armored Core 6
Rusty is the most reliable friendly AC pilot in the campaign.

Character strength is measured in four areas. First is direct combat performance: stagger pressure, damage, mobility, defensive systems, and the threat posed by a character’s AC or boss form. Second is reliability. A pilot who performs consistently across missions ranks above one who is dangerous only under a narrow condition. Third is strategic value, including intelligence, mission support, and access to major routes. Finally, the ranking considers narrative influence, because Walter, Ayre, and Carla materially change the campaign even when they are not fighting beside you.

Names are ranked by their strongest canon encounter rather than by an imagined equalized build. That matters for characters such as Raven, whose original AC NIGHTFALL is a real boss in “Unknown Territory Survey,” and Ayre, whose IB-07: SOL 644 encounter is substantially stronger than her earlier voice-only support role. It also prevents background characters with memorable dialogue from outranking elite pilots.

S-Tier: The Most Important and Dangerous Characters

Ayre’s final battle combines fast melee pressure with Coral energy attacks.

1. Ayre

Ayre is the best overall character because she combines exceptional strategic value with one of the campaign’s hardest boss encounters. As a Coral wave mutation, she gives 621 real-time guidance, identifies Institute technology, and unlocks the Alea Iacta Est route in New Game++. Her boss form, IB-07: SOL 644, uses two Coral blades, rapid aerial movement, delayed energy slashes, and the devastating Coral Oscillation attack. The fight demands controlled boost timing and repeated stagger punishment. Her importance extends from “Reach the Coral Convergence” to the “Fires of Raven” ending.

2. Handler Walter

Walter is S tier for campaign authority, mission intelligence, and his final encounter as IB-C03W: HAL 826. He funds 621’s operations, identifies Arquebus and Balam priorities, and directs the early story through the “Illegal Entry” and “Take the City” operations. His HAL 826 build combines a Coral Oscillator, high-impact firearms, and an extremely aggressive close-range assault. Walter is less mechanically overwhelming than Ayre, but no other handler has a comparable effect on 621’s route through Rubicon 3.

3. V.IV Rusty

Rusty is the strongest conventional AC pilot. Steel Haze uses the RF-024 Turner, BML-G1/P31DUO-02, Vvc-703PM, and a pile-bunker-style melee threat depending on the encounter, while Steel Haze Ortus upgrades him with the explosive WR-0777 Sweet Sixteen and improved close-range pressure. He appears in “The Tunnel Sabotage,” “Reach the Coral Convergence,” and the final assault on the Xylem. Rusty reads combat intelligently, attacks during stagger windows, and remains one of the best allied pilots in the game.

A-Tier: Elite Pilots and Essential Allies

Freud and the major Vespers remain dangerous high-skill AC opponents.

V.II Freud

Freud is the strongest Vespers pilot and the clearest mechanical genius among Arquebus’s ranks. His AC LOADER 4 uses a balanced rifle-and-missile setup rather than a gimmick, making his Arena fight a clean test of fundamentals. He changes range intelligently, punishes reckless healing, and keeps pressure high without relying on oversized boss mechanics. Freud ranks below Rusty because his story influence is limited, but his skill is arguably higher than most named human pilots.

Cinder Carla

Carla is both a superb strategist and a dangerous AC combatant. Her AC FULL COURSE carries the WS-5000 APERITIF hand missiles, explosive shoulder weapons, and a high-pressure missile pattern that makes “Destroy the Weaponized Mining Ship” and the Xylem sequence memorable. She also provides the RaD plan that leads to the “Breach the Kármán Line” route. Carla’s value is broader than her boss statistics: she supplies intelligence, engineering support, and the tactical framework for opposing Arquebus.

G1 Michigan

Michigan is A tier because his leadership and G1 HUNTER build are dangerous even when the player must fight through MT reinforcements first. “Intercept the Redguns” is a resource-management battle: ammunition, repair kits, and stagger control matter before the confrontation with Michigan begins. His DF-GA-08 HU-BEN gatling gun, BML-G2/P19SPL-12 split missiles, and heavy biped frame punish players who stand still. He lacks Ayre’s route significance, but he is Balam’s most effective battlefield commander.

V.III O’Keeffe and V.IV Rusty’s Allies

V.III O’Keeffe is a strong but underused Vesper with a capable midweight build and disciplined ranged pressure. V.IV Rusty’s allies, including the Arquebus pilots encountered around the Xylem and Coral Convergence operations, are less individually important but still outperform standard MT units. These characters sit at the bottom of A tier because their fights demand adaptation without matching Freud’s consistency or Carla’s strategic importance.

B-Tier: Capable Rivals and Route-Specific Characters

Walter and Carla provide the campaign’s most important strategic choices.

Raven

The original Raven is a B-tier character by story influence but an A-tier mechanical opponent. In “Unknown Territory Survey,” NIGHTFALL uses the RF-025 SCUDDER, BML-G1/P31DUO-02, and the PB-033M ASHMEAD pile bunker. Raven is aggressive, understands stagger confirms, and can delete a careless AC with a single melee punish. However, the character has almost no direct dialogue or route control, so this list separates combat danger from total campaign value.

V.II Snail

Snail is an effective Arquebus commander whose narrative arrogance obscures a dangerous build. OPEN FAITH uses the VE-60SNA stun needle launcher and charged laser pressure, forcing the player to respect both ACS strain and explosive damage. His fight in “Breach the Kármán Line” is more manageable than Freud’s because Snail’s movement is predictable, but the stun needle can swing the battle immediately. He ranks B tier because his political role matters, yet his repeated defeats make him less impressive than the top Vespers.

Chatty Stick, G6 Red, and G5 Iguazu

Chatty Stick is a reliable RaD pilot who supports Carla and fights with a practical heavy AC. His importance rises during the Xylem defense, where he buys time against Arquebus forces. G6 Red is a competent Balam soldier encountered in “Attack the Refueling Base,” but his standard military approach is easier to exploit. G5 Iguazu improves throughout the story and becomes a recurring rival, yet his emotional instability creates openings that stronger pilots do not offer. All three are useful specialists rather than campaign-defining figures.

V.IV Maeterlinck, V.V Hawkins, V.VI Materlock, and Index Dunham

These Arena and mission pilots belong in B tier because their ACs can punish inexperienced players, but they lack the durability, AI pressure, or narrative importance of the leading names. Maeterlinck applies steady ranged pressure, Hawkins tests spacing, Materlock uses a dependable Redgun frame, and Index Dunham delivers a straightforward Arena duel. They are valuable practice fights for learning ACS strain, boost-kick timing, and weapon cooldown management.

C-Tier: Minor Operators and Background Characters

C tier does not mean useless; it means limited impact or low direct combat relevance. ALLMIND is the major exception in story importance. As an AI coordinator, it manages mercenary evaluations, supplies Arena data, manipulates the mercenary system, and ultimately becomes the final obstacle of the Alea Iacta Est route. Its combat forms, including IB-07: SOL 644 support and the mass-produced CEL 240 units, are dangerous, but the individual “character” is less readable than Ayre or Walter. ALLMIND therefore sits at the top of C for personal combat identity and would move to S for plot influence alone.

Other C-tier names include RLF leader Middle Flatwell, V.IV Pater, Little Ziyi, Honest Brute, and Volta. Flatwell is a useful ally in “Reach the Coral Convergence,” while Pater’s emotional instability affects Arquebus operations. Honest Brute is memorable because he betrays the RaD group, but his AC does not match Carla’s. Little Ziyi and Volta provide faction texture and optional combat encounters rather than decisive campaign power. The FromSoftware official site remains the best source for developer information, while the Bandai Namco game page covers the published release.

Best Characters to Study for Your Own Builds

Players trying to improve should study Rusty first for aggressive midweight movement, Freud for balanced rifle spacing, and Michigan for heavy-frame stagger pressure. Ayre’s final fight teaches aerial tracking, delayed hit confirmation, and Coral damage avoidance. Walter demonstrates why a strong build needs both ranged pressure and a reliable stagger punish, while Raven’s NIGHTFALL is the clearest lesson in combining the PB-033M ASHMEAD with a controlled ACS break.

For broader build planning, compare this ranking with Steamoz’s Rust weapons tier list, Minecraft weapons tier list, and Raid: Shadow Legends character guide. Those games use conventional loadout or roster systems, whereas Armored Core 6 makes the pilot and AC inseparable: the best “character” is often the one whose frame, weapons, AI behavior, and mission context create the most demanding fight.
